This week we're learning about how scientists and society measure intelligence, and the relationship between smartness and success. We're joined by cognitive psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman, to talk about his book "Ungifted: Intelligence Redefined." And we'll talk to Nathaniel Barr, postdoctoral fellow at the University of Waterloo, about research into the relationship between smartphone use and cognitive skills.

Scott Barry Kaufman

Scott Barry Kaufman is scientific director of the Imagination Institute in the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania where he conducts research on imagination, creativity, and play. Kaufman is author of "Ungifted: Intelligence Redefined" and co-author (with Carolyn Gregoire) of the upcoming book "Wired to Create: Unraveling the Mysteries of the Creative Mind". He is also host of The Psychology Podcast, co-founder of The Creativity Post, and author of the column "Beautiful Minds" for Scientific American. Kaufman completed his doctorate in cognitive psychology from Yale University in 2009 and received his masters degree in experimental psychology from Cambridge University in 2005, where he was a Gates Cambridge Scholar.

Nathaniel Barr

Nathaniel Barr is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Waterloo, affiliated with both the Laboratory for Reasoning and Decision Making of Dr. Jonathan Fugelsang and the Vision and Attention Lab of Dr. Daniel Smilek. He conducts a mixture of applied and theoretical research on topics spanning creativity, reasoning, memory, perception, and attention. He is an award winning teacher and has taught numerous courses ranging from the introductory to advanced levels on psychology, cognition, memory, and neuroscience. He frequently give lectures and workshops for diverse audiences on the nature of our minds and how to make the most of them.
